Pounds and ounces

I don't like it, but I can understand why everything is sold in metric units. However, there are millions of people who, like me, think of foodstuffs in pounds and ounces. It therefore well behooves shop owners to provide conversion tables for their staff or to - mirabile dictu! - train the idiot school-leavers they employ. So why, then, did the spotty youths in Whittards today not know what a pound was?
